Costantini Glass Beads

Our Story on Murano Island

Vetro di Murano is the denomination that characterizes the artistic glass made in Murano, an island in the Venice lagoon.

The main characteristics of Murano artistic glass are its brightness, lightness and strong light reflection.

Our Venetian lampwork beads are obtained by working glass rods produced by hand directly on the island of Murano by the “Effetre Murano s.r.l.” furnace.

The production system, from the raw material to the finished product, is unique in the world and is only known on the island of Murano.

The production of glass beads, called “conteria”, derives from glass rods, known since ancient times.

It is a historically established fact that glass beads have been produced in Venice since the 13th century.

Over the centuries, these have been used in tribal, initiatory and religious ceremonies, as well as as talismans for crops. Even today, in some African tribes, the ornaments created with “beads” determine the caste they belong to and are handed down from generation to generation as they are brought as dowry.

Venetian glass beads, artefacts of ancient origin, in Venice have given rise to an art with unique characteristics, still practiced today by “perlere” and “perleri” who melt and shape the colored glass until obtaining, one at a time, beads of any size and shape.

Skilled “impiraresse”, beaders, then thread them creating necklaces, earrings and accessories, thanks to which traditions, memory and craftsmanship are preserved. An art that has been included among the Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
